How I became obsessed with envelope budgeting

It started with a frustrated customer and a question I couldn’t stop thinking about.

I spent eight years as a financial advisor at one of Hong Kong’s biggest banks. I helped people with mortgages, investments, insurance — all the standard stuff. But here’s what I noticed: even my smartest clients struggled with everyday spending. They’d have perfect investment portfolios and then overspend on groceries every month.

One afternoon, a customer came in frustrated. She earned well. Her husband earned well. They had a solid financial plan. But they couldn’t stick to their budget. Every week they’d spend money they didn’t plan to spend. Gifts for relatives. Dinners out. Random purchases. She asked me: “Why is it so hard to control what I spend if I know exactly how much I have?”

That question haunted me. I started researching behavioral economics. I read about why tracking spending on apps doesn’t work for most people. And I discovered something: the envelope system. Not the old-fashioned cash-in-envelopes approach — that was just one part of it. The real power was psychological. When money is in a specific envelope for a specific purpose, you actually think before spending it.

I became fascinated. So fascinated that I started helping clients try it. Then more clients. Then I realized this wasn’t a side project anymore — it was what I actually wanted to do. In 2015, I left banking and started studying how to adapt envelope budgeting specifically for Hong Kong families. Our costs are different. Our spending patterns are different. Our family structures are different. The global advice doesn’t work here.

Over the past nine years, I’ve worked with more than 2,000 families. I’ve seen what works. I’ve seen what fails. I’ve learned that envelope budgeting isn’t about deprivation — it’s about clarity. When you know exactly where your money goes, spending becomes intentional instead of accidental.

Why he does what he does

1

Financial wellness shouldn’t be complicated

Most budgeting advice requires spreadsheets, apps, and constant monitoring. Michael believes that real financial control comes from simplicity — systems so clear that you don’t need to think about them.

2

Flexibility within boundaries works better than rigid rules

People aren’t robots. Envelope budgeting succeeds because it’s flexible enough for real life while maintaining firm enough boundaries to prevent overspending.

3

Context matters more than theory

Global budgeting advice doesn’t work for Hong Kong. Your rental costs, family obligations, and spending patterns are unique. The system should adapt to your life, not the other way around.

4

Behavioral psychology is more important than math

Knowing you have $5,000 in your bank account is different from knowing you have $300 left in your dining envelope. The psychological effect changes behavior.

How he works with families

A practical, step-by-step approach that’s proven to work.

1

Understand Your Situation

Every family’s different. Michael starts by understanding your income, expenses, and most importantly — where the money actually goes each month. No judgment, just clarity.

2

Design Your Envelope Categories

Not generic categories. Your categories. Rent, groceries, transport, savings — plus the flexible ones like dining out and gifts. Built specifically for your spending patterns.

3

Set Realistic Limits

Numbers that actually work. Not so tight you’ll break them in week one. Not so loose they don’t change anything. Based on your real spending patterns and your real goals.

4

Choose Your System

Physical envelopes with cash. A budgeting app. Spreadsheets. Whatever you’ll actually use. The medium matters less than consistency.

5

Review Weekly

Fifteen minutes each week to check your envelope balances. Spot problems early. Adjust if needed. Stay on track without stress.
